LEBANON, Tenn. – Bre Neal posted 15 points and 16 rebounds, both game-highs, and 15th-ranked Cumberland used an 18-4 run to open the game to claim a 56-42 victory over Grace College on Saturday at the Union College Holiday Classic in Barbourville, Ky.
Chelsey Hall and Julia Fox each netted 11 points for Cumberland (10-3) in the victory, though CU shot just 3-of-19 from 3-point range in the contest. Cumberland held Grace (5-8) to just 32 percent shooting and forced 18 turnovers by the Lancers.
Neal netted eight of the game’s first 16 points and Hall added a 3-pointer and another field goal for an 18-4 advantage with just over two minutes to play in the opening period. Neal posted two more buckets to start the second quarter and Cumberland increased its leads to 29-8 with 7:44 left in the half.
Kelsie Peterson hit a pair of 3-pointers, Haley Richardson registered a pair of baskets and Darian Patton’s field goal capped a 14-2 Grace run over the next six minutes, cutting the CU lead to nine, but Fox’s basket with a minute remaining in the period gave Cumberland a 33-22 advantage at intermission.
Neal collected 13 points and 11 rebounds in the half and Hall posted nine points for CU.
The Lancers scored the first six points of the third quarter, four of those from Richardson, and a basket by Peterson and two free throws from Richardson made it a three-point game, 37-34, with 4:01 left in the period. Cumberland netted the final eight points of the quarter, though, thanks to three points by Jalita Fason, a 3-pointer from Fox and a field goal by Terra Pryor, extending the lead back to 11 heading to the final 10 minutes.
Cumberland put together a 9-2 spurt to begin the final quarter as well, with Fox hitting another triple and Neal, Fason and Hall each scoring two points, making it 54-36 with 6:13 to play.
Richardson led Grace with 14 points and Peterson finished with 10.
Cumberland hosts Huntington College on Monday, December 21, at 2 p.m. in the club’s final game before Christmas.
