LEBANON, Tenn. – Ana Laura Pages Preuss carded a five-over par 77 in her first collegiate round while sophomore Raquel Romero Valverde and senior Savannah Strode both shot 79, leading the Cumberland women’s golf team on Monday at the Thomas University Invitational in Valdosta, Ga.
Pages Preuss is tied for ninth among 53 participants and 10 teams while Romero Valverde and Strode are tied for 15th. Only three players in the field shot under par, with Kaitlin Riley from the University of the Cumberlands posting a four-under par 68 and UC’s Lucia Pena coming in at two-under. Dalton State College’s Heather Nail recorded a 71 as well.
Senior Abbey Burgdorf carded an opening-round 80, tied for 18th, and junior Anna Leigh Cleveland collected a first-round 83, tied for 29th.
Cumberland stands third in the team standings, one stroke ahead of Campbellsville University and four in front of Lindsey Wilson. The University of the Cumberlands holds a four-shot advantage over Dalton State for the top two spots.
Shotgun start for the par-72, 6,027-yard course Tuesday is scheduled for 9 a.m. ET. Thomas University is providing live video of the 18th hole as well as the awards ceremony on Tuesday.
