Burgdorf, Valverde both shoot 74, CU women take team victory

LEBANON, Tenn. – Senior Abbey Burgdorf and sophomore Raquel Romero Valverde each shot two-over par 74 and Cumberland erased a three-shot deficit to post a team victory in women’s golf action Tuesday at the RedHawk Fall Classic at Canebrake Club in Athens, Ala.

The Phoenix trailed Loyola University by three strokes heading into Tuesday’s final round, but four scores of 78 or better propelled Cumberland to a six shot victory over the Wolf Pack.

Burgdorf registered 12 pars in the second round and 23 of the 36 holes, posting a 74 and a two-day total of 150, one shot behind individual medalist Hannah Sager from Faulkner University. The Ashland, Ohio, native collected two birdies in each round.

Valverde also recorded 23 pars over her two round and netted two birdies on Tuesday as well, shooting 74 and a two-day score of 152, tied for fifth.

Sophomore Ana Laura Pages Preuss carded a second-round 78 and tied for second alongside Burgdorf. Pages Preuss held a two-stroke advantage after the opening round but Sager posted the low round of the day with an even-par 72 for a one-shot victory. Pages Preuss finished the tournament with six birdies and 19 pars.

Senior Savanna Strode recorded 12 pars and two birdies in the second round, shooting four-over par 76. The Celina, Tenn., native tied for 10th with a two-day total of 158.

Junior Anna Leigh Cleveland finished with an 85 and a two-day score of 171, placing 24th.

Cumberland plays its final fall event next week at the Metro Parks/Town and Country Invitational at McCabe Golf Course in Nashville, Tenn.
