Metzler wins at Cumberland Open
LEBANON, Tenn. – Sophomore Eric Metzler posted three victories to place first at 184, freshman Andrew Blackwell was second at 157 and freshman Bryan Waller finished third at 133 for the Bulldogs over the weekend at the Cumberland Open at the Dallas Floyd Recreation Center.
Metzler won three matches on his way to victory in the 184 class, defeating University of the Cumberlands Jacob Brady, 9-3, in the quarterfinals and Oklahoma City’s Jake Mabry, 12-3. He then won 6-1 in the finals over Marion Military’s Greg Magee.
Blackwell defeated Marion Military’s Derrick Lucas by Fall at 5:48 in the quarterfinals and won, 5-2, over McKendree’s Matt Beasley in the semifinals. Blackwell lost, 9-4 to Oklahoma City’s Nik Turner in the finals.
Waller won his first match by Fall at 1:26 over Bill Seaman and defeated Campbellsville’s Andrew Clark, 6-2, in the quarterfinals. He lost to Oklahoma City’s Mitch Fenton, 5-2, in the semifinals, but came back to win 6-3 over Marion Military’s Reece Freeman and then defeated teammate Ryan McKenzie, 3-2, in the third-place match.
Freshman Andrew Casadaban placed fifth at 141, winning his first match over Southern Indiana’s Hayden Boeglin by Fall at 1:13 and then defeating McKendree’s Kody Presswood by Fall at 3:50. Casadaban lost to Oklahoma City’s Jeremy Garner, 12-9, in the semifinals.
Casadaban dropped an 11-9 decision to Campbellsville’s Matt David in the backdraw but defeated Chattanooga’s TJ Hannah in the fifth-place match by Fall at 0:45.
Cumberland heads to the Missouri Valley Open in Marshall, Mo., on February 7.
