LEBANON, Tenn. – Junior Mikey Davis lost 3-2 in the finals at 141 pounds, freshman Ryan McKenzie and junior James Casadaban both placed third and junior BJ Stewart finished fifth, leading Cumberland’s wrestling teams Saturday at the NAIA East Qualifier at the Dallas Floyd Recreation Center.

Davis, top-ranked nationally in his weight class, swept through a pair of matches, defeating Campbellsville’s Matt David, 9-0, and Lindenwood’s Wilson Metellus, 8-7, before meeting Notre Dame College’s second-ranked Adam Koballa in the finals. Koballa claimed a 3-2 victory in the finals, much to the displeasure of the Columbus, Ohio, native.

McKenzie added his name to the list of national tournament qualifiers with his third-place finish at 133 pounds. The Memphis, Tenn., native won his first match 9-2, over Marcus Saylor from the Univ. of the Cumberlands, but dropped a 2-0 decision to Campbellsville’s Daphillo Succes. McKenzie came back with three victories in the backdraw, including by Fall at 1:45 over Lindenwood’s Elliott Martin. He avenged the earlier loss with a 6-5 triumph over Succes in the third-place match.

Casadaban posted a victory in his first match by Fall at 4:46 at 157 pounds over Lindsey Wilson’s Caleb Anthony but lost 14-4 to Notre Dame College’s second-ranked Thomas Straughn. The Metairie, La., native rebounded with two pins in the backdraw, at 0:24 over Missouri Baptist’s Gerald Harris and at 1:12 over Dustin Center from the Univ. of the Cumberlands.

Stewart also won his first match, 14-7, against McKendree’s Cedric Powell in the heavyweight division but lost 16-7 to Notre Dame College’s second-ranked Orlando Scales. The Rome, Ga., native lost 8-5 to Missouri Baptist’s Mike Wakim but defeated Powell again in the fifth-place match.
