Birt claims Missouri Open title
Sunday, November 22, 2009
COLUMBIA, Mo.Neil Birt picked up four straight wins to sweep his way through the 141-pound weight class at the Missouri Open and earned his second career open win Sunday at the Missouri Open, while B.J. Stewart claimed third place in the heavyweight class.

In addition to Birt and Stewart, five other Bulldog grapplers – Noah Hunt, Matt Scheve, Chris Block, Andrew Blackwell and Kyle Studer – picked up at least two wins in the tournament.

Birt, who upped his record to 7-2 on the year, used a 6-1 decision to down Max Ortega of Indiana University in the 141 final. He clinched his spot in the championship match by pinning McKendree University’s Kyle Williams, who was an All-American a year ago, in 1:33. Birt opened the tournament with a technical fall, 16-0, win over Travis Greenwood of Missouri Valley College. The sophomore from Fairview Park, Ohio then took an 8-3 decision over Luke Greco of the host Tigers.

A loss in his second match forced Stewart to the consolation bracket, where he won four consecutive matches. In the third place match, the junior from Rome, Ga., pinned Brandon Hayes of Central Missouri in 2:20. The victory avenged his only loss of the tournament, a 10-8 decision. Stewart’s other wins included a medical forfeit, a fall in 4:00 (Travis Ewart, Missouri Valley College) and a 16-4 major decision (Joe Kent, unattached) as he improved to 13-2 on the season.

Block, who was wrestling at 149, won his first three matches of the day, including a 16-4 major decision over Indiana’s Jacob Smith, before dropping his last two. The freshman also picked up decisions over McKendree’s Mandela Johnson, 4-2, and Russell Naylor, 5-4, of Central Missouri.

After dropping his first match by decision, Hunt rebounded with back-to-back wins at 125 before bowing out of the tournament with a decision loss to Missouri’s Eric Wilson. The Dacula, Ga., native also earned wins over Trevor Brown (technical fall, 16-0) of Central Missouri and Oklahoma City Robert Turrentine (major decision, 18-4).

At 133, Scheve defeated McKendree’s Ryan Winchell by major decision, 12-0, to start the day before dropping an 8-1 decision to Mark Johnson of Lincoln College. He then picked up a 15-0 technical fall win over Oklahoma State’s J.J. Goblet, but his day ended with a 7-6 decision loss to Daphilo Succes of Mid-South Conference foe Campbellsville.

Blackwell was forced to retire from his final match at 165 because of injury. The sophomore from Jefferson, Ga., earned two wins in the consolation bracket – pinning both Adam Halladay of Central Missouri (1:37) and Chad Greismer (2:05), who was competing unattached – after dropping his first match of the day by fall.

Cumberland, which was ranked 14th in the preseason NAIA Wrestling Coaches Poll, will return to action Wednesday, hosting a dual against No. 9 Campbellsville. The first regular season poll will be released Tuesday.
