Favors places seventh for CU wrestling at MVC Invite

LEBANON, Tenn. – Alema Favors won six matches en route to seventh place and Anthony Maia picked up two victories for Cumberland wrestling over the weekend at the Missouri Valley College Invitational in Marshall, Mo.

Favors started the day with a pair of wins in the main draw at 141, recording a 7-3 Decision versus Morningside College’s Lane Eggen and a 3-2 Decision against Marian University’s Jesus Mancera before dropping a 4-1 Decision to Grand View’s Grayson Brenna.

In the wrestleback the senior from Stone Mountain, Ga., posted a 12-6 Decision over Jamestown University’s Jesus Murillo and a 5-2 Decision against Graceland University’s Kahlyn Bressler before picking up a Medical Forfeit versus Midland University’s Tristan Zamilpa.

Favors lost a 4-3 Decision to Lourdes University’s Nickalas Hennaman but rebounded with a 6-4 Decision over Baker University’s Joey Perez in the seventh-place match.

Maia also registered two victories in the main draw at 149, a 13-9 Decision against Benedictine College’s Keenan Graef and a 14-2 Major Decision against Briar Cliff University’s Brad Wiggs before losing a 5-3 Decision to Northwestern College’s Dante Preciado.

The Palm Coast, Fla., native then lost by Fall at 3:49 to Baker’s Colby Johnson in the backdraw.

Freshman Blaine Fussell lost his first bout at 125 by Fall at 6:30 to Montana State-Northern’s Nick Kunz but pinned Central Christian’s Nick Burks in the wrestleback before losing by Fall again, this time at 2:23 to Oklahoma City University’s Montana Moon.

Grayson Walthall lost his first bout as well, a 6-4 Decision at 285 to Calumet College of St. Joseph’s Nick Fowler, but he rebounded with a 6-1 Decision in the wrestleback over Calumet’s Trayshaw Jones. The freshman then dropped a 4-3 Decision to Williams Baptist’s Tyler Giorgini.

Joshua Teaster lost by Fall at 2:50 to Missouri Valley College’s Marcus Thompson and dropped a 9-2 Decision to Jamestown’s Carsen Paytner in the backdraw.

The Phoenix take on Brewton-Parker in a dual match this coming Friday at 7 p.m. at Dallas Floyd Phoenix Arena and host the Cumberland Open next Saturday.
