LEBANON, Tenn. – Cumberland dominated Kentucky Wesleyan, 46-4, and then posted three Major Decisions and three Decisions in the second match of the evening, holding off Brewton-Parker, 21-17, in wrestling action here Friday night at Dallas Floyd Phoenix Arena.
The Phoenix (4-7, 2-3 Mid-South) picked up five Forfeits and a pin in the outing against Kentucky Wesleyan and posted six straight victories from 133-174, registering all of its points of those six bouts in the win over Brewton-Parker.
Kentucky Wesleyan’s LaMont Wilson posted a 15-6 Major Decision over Blaine Fussell at 125 to start the first match, but that was all for the Panthers (0-4).
Cumberland’s Austin Plumlee registered a 10-5 Decision against Andrew Parker at 133 and Alema Favors followed with a 15-5 Major Decision for the Phoenix over James Loi at 141. CU picked up Forfeits at 149, 157, 174, 184 and 197 and Matthew Sells pinned Kohana Wilks in just nine seconds at 165.
Grayson Walthall fell behind early at 285 to Wesleyan’s Kairus Washington, but the CU freshman evened the bout at two late in the third period and then got a takedown with 12 seconds remaining in the final period, holding on for a 5-4 Decision.
The second match started much the same as the first, with Brewton-Parker’s Lucas Nelson recording a TF; 23-8 over Fussell at 125, but Plumlee once again for the Phoenix on the board, this time with a Major Decision, 16-4, versus Chris Houston at 133.
That began the string of six consecutive wins for Cumberland, with 19th-ranked Keshawn Laws collecting a 9-1 Major Decision against James Stoudenmire at 141 and Anthony Maia posting an 18-9 Major Decision versus Blake Beasley at 149, stretching the overall lead in the match for CU to 12-5.
Joshua Teaster followed with an 8-2 Decision over Dean Esquibel at 157 and Sells picked up his second victory of the night at 165, a 9-4 Decision against Douglas Peppers. Nathan Walton, ranked seventh nationally at 174 for the Phoenix, held off Nate Pristavec with a 4-2 Decision. Pristavec entered the bout ranked No. 3 in the country at 165. That win put Cumberland in front, 21-5.
The Barons (2-6, 0-5) registered wins in each of the last three bouts, starting with eighth-ranked Brooks Climmons edging CU’s 13th-ranked John Olivieri at 184 with a 3-2 Decision. Tenth-ranked David Hamil pinned Nawin Hyers at 4:40 and Jose Garcia finished the match with a 5-3 win in Sudden Victory for Brewton-Parker over Walthall after the CU freshman evened the bout late in the third period.
The Phoenix host the Cumberland Open on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m.
