Maia, Walton earn wins in main draw for CU wrestling

LEBANON, Tenn. – Cumberland’s Anthony Maia posted two wins and Nathan Walton recorded one to remain in the main draw while Keyshawn Laws and John Olivieri each stayed alive with victories in the wrestleback during the first session of the 62nd Annual NAIA Wrestling Championships on Friday in Des Moines, Iowa.

The evening session begins at 6:30 p.m. CT in both the main draw and wrestleback at the Jacobsen Exhibition Center.

Maia registered a 9-3 Decision against Reinhardt University’s Jody Mcalister at 149 and followed that with an 8-7 Decision over Southern Oregon’s fifth-ranked Chandler Michael. The Palm Coast, Fla., native takes on Baker University’s 15th-ranked Colby Johnson in the quarterfinals Friday night.

Walton, ranked second nationally at 174, earned a bye and then posted a 10-4 Decision versus Ottawa University’s Micah Miller. The Brownsburg, Ind., native faces Reinhardt’s fourth-ranked Michael Carew in the quarterfinals on Friday evening.

Laws, ranked 17th nationally at 141, received a bye and then lost an 11-4 Decision to Indiana Tech’s eighth-ranked Gaige Torres in the main draw. The Queens, N.Y., native received a Forfeit in the backdraw and faces Midland University’s 11th-ranked Tristan Zamilpa on Friday night.

Olivieri, ranked 13th in the country at 184, also earned a bye but lost an 8-3 Decision to Baker’s Jacob Smith, Jr., in the Round of 16. The Murfreesboro, Tenn., native picked up a 3-1 Decision in Sudden Victory against Missouri Valley’s eighth-ranked Tristan Ramberg and takes on Williams Baptist’s eighth-ranked Jeff Haley on the wrestleback on Friday evening.
