LEBANON, Tenn. – The Cumberland women’s soccer team was picked third in the Mid-South Conference in a preseason vote of league coaches released this week.
The Bulldogs, under third-year head coach Gavin McKinney, return 15 letterwinners and eight starters from last season’s club that finished 10-8-0 despite a myriad of injuries, including season-ending aliments to Michelle Ward, Simone Quinn and Reneé LaRose. CU played 10 freshmen during the campaign, with the group combining for 112 starts.
All 18 matches saw a freshman in goal for Cumberland as well – 15 starts by Elizabeth Surdam and three from Lindsay Kitson – with the duo combining for a 1.26 goals-against-average with 114 saves and five shutouts. Of the 32 players on the Bulldogs roster in 2012, 25 will start the year as either freshmen or sophomores.
Cumberland defeated Campbellsville University (3-1) and the University of the Cumberlands (2-1) and dropped a 2-0 decision at Georgetown College last season.
Lindsey Wilson received nine first-place votes and 81 total points to claim a 13th consecutive MSC championship, with Georgetown picking up the other first-place vote and 69 points for second place. Campbellsville and the Cumberlands ranked fourth and fifth, respectively, followed by Shawnee State, the University of Rio Grande, the University of Pikeville, St. Catharine College and Bluefield College.
Cumberland opens the season August 28 at Bryan College and plays its first home match on September 6 against Martin Methodist.
