LEBANON, Tenn. – Mia Persson scored midway through the first half and assisted on Cecilia Ekstrand’s breakaway goal in the final two minutes, as third-ranked Lindsey Wilson edged Cumberland, 2-0, in women’s soccer action Tuesday evening in Columbia, Ky.
The Bulldogs (7-2-0, 3-1-0 Mid-South) played fairly evenly with the Blue Raiders from start to finish but were unable to create many good scoring chances against the stout LWC defense that has allowed just three goals to conference opponents in the last three seasons.
Lindsey Wilson outshot CU just 9-6 in the match. CU keeper Lindsay Kitson made four saves and LWC’s Josephine Frigge had two saves.
Persson scored on an assist from Laerke Lillelund Michaelsen in the 13th minute for the early lead for the home team. With less than two minutes remaining Persson play a long ball to near midfield where Ekstrand took control of the ball just onsides, dribbled downfield and beat Kitson low and right for the final score.
Cumberland plays at Bluefield College on Saturday at Noon CT before returning home October 3 to face Union College at 2 p.m.
