LEBANON, Tenn. – Kelsey Langille scored twice in the first half and Rhianne Parsons added her sixth goal of the year early in the second half in Cumberland’s 3-1 victory over Bethel University in women’s soccer action Sunday at Lindsey Donnell Stadium-Kirk Field.
The Bulldogs (10-2-0) extended their winning streak to three matches overall and defeated the Wildcats for the first time in the regular season in recent history after seven consecutive losses in the series.
Langille netted her 27th and 28th goals of the year in the victory with the scores coming less than six minutes apart.
On the attack Langille picked up a deflection near the top of the box and her strike found the bottom left corner of the net for a 1-0 advantage in the 17th minute.
Taylor Nay took a free kick from near the left sideline in the 23rd minute and a Bethel defender headed it out, but Langille’s half-volley from 15 yards also found the back of the net.
Bethel took advantage of a hand ball near the top of the box in the 38th minute, with Rachel Rathbone converting the penalty kick, cutting the Cumberland lead to 2-1 at the half.
After the break Shauna Gilpin made a long run from near the sideline at the half-line into the middle of the field, avoiding several defenders before sliding Parsons, who beat the keeper near the penalty spot for the goal.
CU created several other scoring chances in the opening 20 minutes of the second period but was unable to extend its lead. Bethel (7-3-0) hit the crossbar and nearly had a rebound after a mishandle from Cumberland keeper Lindsay Kitson as well.
Kitson made three saves to pick up her ninth win of the year in net, while Nicoda Linton collected eight saves for the Wildcats.
Cumberland hosts Georgetown College next Saturday at Noon at Lindsey Donnell Stadium-Kirk Field in the first match of a doubleheader with the men.
