Women's soccer controls final 25 minutes of each half in 8-0 triumph

LEBANON, Tenn. – Shauna Gilpin scored twice and handed out one assist, Kelsey Langille added two goals and Simone Quinn recorded a goal and an assist in Cumberland’s 8-0 victory Sunday over the University of Pikeville in women’s soccer action in Pikeville, Ky.

With the win, the Bulldogs (13-2-0, 7-1-0) at least the No. 2 seed in the Mid-South Conference Championships that begin November 3. Cumberland can do no worse than tie for second with Campbellsville University, whom CU has already defeated this season. The Bulldogs also set a school single-season record for victories in a season on Sunday, surpassing the previous mark set by the 2005 club that finished 12-5-2.

Cumberland started slowly on the goal-scoring side despite outshooting the Bears, 23-3, in the first half. Rhianne Parsons finally broke through in the 21st minute on an assist from Quinn and Taylor Nay followed with an unassisted goal in the 28th minute. Gilpin netted her first goal of the match in the 33rd minute and the Bulldogs led 3-0 at the half.

CU was scoreless for the first 20 minutes in the second period but dominated the final 25 minutes of the match and outshot Pikeville (4-9-0, 0-8-0). Quinn scored on an assist from Nay in the 66th minute and Langille netted unassisted goals in the 74th and 79th minutes.

Freshman Brenna Evilcizer recorded her third goal of the season in the 81st minute on an assist from Gilpin, who then scored the final goal unassisted in the 88th minute.

The Bulldogs take on Shawnee State this coming Saturday at Noon and travel to Union University on Monday, October 29.
