LEBANON, Tenn. – A high-arching shot from 30 yards by sophomore Kaitlin Phillips fell just under the cross bar at the far post for a golden goal, giving Cumberland a 1-0 overtime victory over Union University on Monday evening at the Smith Soccer Complex in Jackson, Tenn.
The two teams remained scoreless through regulation, though the Bulldogs (15-2-0) controlled possession for much of the second half, challenging Union keeper Emily Waggoner into four saves. CU outshot NCAA Division II Union, 13-9, in the match, with just one Union (7-9-2) shot reaching CU goalie Lindsay Kitson.
Sophomore Shauna Gilpin assisted on the first goal of the season for Phillips, who had 10 assists entering the contest. The Bulldog defense posted its 10th shutout of the season in the win and the unit has allowed just 10 goals all season.
Cumberland opens play in the Mid-South Conference Championships at home on Saturday at 11 a.m. against Shawnee State. With the victory the Bulldogs would advance to the semifinals and finals in Columbia, Ky., on November 7-8.
