LEBANON, Tenn. – Cumberland University will host Ottawa University in the NAIA Championship Opening Round on Saturday at Lindsey Donnell Stadium-Kirk Field.
The Bulldogs, ranked ninth in the latest NAIA Women’s Soccer Coaches’ Top 25 Poll released Sunday by the national office, will host a match in the Opening Round for the first time in program history. Cumberland heads into the national tournament 15-3-1 overall. CU won the Mid-South Conference regular season championship before falling in overtime in the MSC Tournament finals last Friday.
Ottawa finished third in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference and stands 13-6-1 overall and 7-2 in the KCAC. The Braves defeated Kansas Wesleyan on penalty kicks (7-6) in the finals of the conference championships on Saturday, earning the league’s automatic berth into the national tournament.
The NAIA Championship Opening Round is part of the 32-team NAIA Championships, with the winners of the 16 Opening Round matches advancing to the final site in Orange Beach, Ala., to crown the national champion December 2-7. Cumberland won its Opening Round match last season at Martin Methodist before falling to Concordia [OR] University in the Round of 16 last year in Orange Beach.
