Women win twice on the road

LEBANON, Tenn. – The Cumberland women’s tennis team won a pair of 5-2 decisions over Campbellsville Univ. and the Univ. of the Cumberlands before losing 5-2 at home to Western Kentucky over the weekend.
 
Cumberland (7-7) played the Univ. of the Cumberlands and Campbellsville Univ. Friday in Williamsburg, Ky., before hosting the Hilltoppers Saturday on campus in the final home match of the season.
 
The Bulldogs won both doubles matches and all three completed singles outings Friday in a 5-2 triumph over the Univ. of the Cumberlands.
 
Bea Mompó-Rebaque and Amber Johnson defeated Kelcey Bauer and Haley Farris, 8-6, at No. 1 doubles, while Emily Jacobs and Courtney Schaub posted an 8-2 victory at No. 2 over Donna Strong and Shelby Muff.
 
Mompó-Rebaque won 6-0, 6-1, over Bauer at No. 1 singles, while Schaub claimed a 6-1, 6-3, victory at No. 2 against Strong and Jacobs posted a 6-0, 6-1, victory at No. 3 over Kaitlin Smith.
 
Cumberland won all five completed matches against Campbellsville as well, including an 8-5 decision by Mompó-Rebaque and Johnson over Anita Henestrosa and Stacey Drew at No. 1 doubles and an 8-1 triumph by Jacobs and Schaub at No. 2 against Melanie Jones and Ana Farias.
 
In singles Schaub defeated Drew, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 2, Jacobs won 6-0, 6-1, over Meredith Coffey at No. 3 and Johnson posted a 6-0, 6-1, victory against DeeAnn Taylor at No. 4.

 
In Saturday’s home match, the Bulldogs could muster just one doubles victory and two singles wins in the 5-2 defeat.
 
WKU’s Katrina Vucina and Fionna Heuff defeated Mompó-Rebaque and Johnson, 8-5, at No. 1, but CU’s Schaub and Jacobs claimed an 8-5 victory at No. 2 over Carrie True and Leanne Caplinger.
 
In singles Mompó-Rebaque won the first set, 6-3, before Vucina retired, and Johnson claimed a 6-2, 6-3, victory for the Bulldogs over Caplinger at No. 4.
 
Cumberland next plays in the NAIA Qualifying Tournament, April 29-May 1 in Georgetown, Ky.
