LEBANON, Tenn. – Cumberland’s Ainhoa Garjio Garrido posted three singles victories en route to the semifinals and fellow newcomer Marta Ferrando Pea won twice in singles as well for Cumberland in women’s tennis action this past weekend at the ITA Southeast Regional in Georgetown, Ky.
Garrido received a bye in the first round before posting a 6-1, 6-2, victory over Asbury University’s Sarah Beth Alford and then won 6-4, 6-1, versus Georgetown College’s Lauren Fazenbaker. In the quarterfinals she won a super tiebreaker against Campbellsville University’s Kaede Amano before falling in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 1-6, to eventual champion Isabella Dale from the University of the Cumberlands.
Pea registered a 6-4, 6-1, triumph over Lindsey Wilson’s Gabriella Pedroza andf won 6-3, 6-0, versus Georgetown’s Natalie Fiepke before dropping a 2-6, 1-6, decision to Lindsey Wilson’s Natalia Kattah in the quarterfinals.
Franki Jecker won her opening match, 6-0, 6-0, against Bethel University’s Shanequa Miller before losing 1-6, 4-6 to Lindsey Wilson’s Maria Cid, while Sarah Edwards lost her first outing, 2-6, 2-6, to Georgetown’s Amanda Moore.
Jasmine Shankar defeated Asbury’s Emma Ramsey in the Round of 64 before dropping a 6-7, 4-6, decision to Denee Lyttle, and Beleń Salazar Yańez lost her first match, 0-6, 6-7, to Georgetown’s Fiepke.
In doubles Jecker and Edwards defeated Indiana-Southeast’s Dana Frank and Alexis Applegate, 8-2, before losting 8-6 to Georgetown’s Fazenbaker and Shae Henry in the Round of 16. Shankar and Salazar Yańez posted an 8-4 victory over Milligan College’s Minda Martin and Brenna Ketron but lost Georgetown’s Madelyn Kauffman and Amanda Moore, 8-1.
