Two men, four women reach Round of 32 singles at ITA Regionals

LEBANON, Tenn. – Riccardo Ferraris and Ramon Puertolas both won for the men while four women – Ainhoa Garijo Garrido, Marianela Landi, Trinidad Aguirre and Joana Bou – all advanced for Cumberland in singles on Thursday at the ITA Southeast Regionals presented by Oracle in Georgetown, Ky.

Ferraris defeated Bethel University’s Zach Vanderbough, 6-2, 6-3, and posted a 4-6, 6-3, 10-2, win over Asbury University’s Aquille Trotman. He advances to faces Campbellsville University’s Alejandro Reyes in the Round of 32.

Puertolas collected a 6-1, 4-1, retired, victory against Montreat College’s Ben Cree and takes on Asbury’s Luiz Hartfkopf in the Round of 32.

Pau Grabuleda Cruañas dropped a 6-1, 6-3, decision to Bluefield College’s Michael Gutu while Thiago Lopes defeated Georgetown’s College’s Cole McCreary, 6-1, 6-1, before retiring in the second set down 1-6, 1-4, to Asbury’s Choopat Suvimolstean in the Round of 64.

In the bottom half of the draw Axel Lucich dropped a 6-1, 4-6, 10-6, decision to Campbellsville’s Cesar Castro and Omar Santiagonúñez Ahumada retired in the first set down 2-4 to Union College’s Srdjan Trosic.

In doubles Lopes and Lucich defeated Bethel’s Igor Aguilera and Edwyn Ramos, 8-2, and face Campbellsville’s Alex Spalding and Castro Friday in the Round of 16.

Grabuleda Cruañas and Santiagonúñez Ahumada lost 8-3 to Union’s Ewan McKinnie and Lois Castellon while Ferraris and Puertolas blanked Indiana-Southeast’s Brock Winchell and Dalton Fensler, moving on to play Georgetown’s Ryo Takeda and Tristen Nosek in the Round of 16.

For the women Aguirre recorded a 6-2, 6-3, victory over Indiana-Southeast’s Camille Greenwell and faces Georgetown’s Lauren Fazenbaker. Bou defeated Campbellsville’s Grace Rowe, 5-7, 6-2, 10-8, and she takes on Georgetown’s Shae Henry. Both of those matches are in the Round of 32.

Garijo Garrido collected a 6-3, 6-1, win against Samantha Fraser from the University of Pikeville, advancing to take on Milligan College’s Lexie Hill, while Landi registered a 7-6, 2-0, retired, victory over Lindsey Wilson’s Gabriella Pedroza and faces Campbellsville’s Majella Nobile.

Jasmine Shankar lost 6-0, 6-0, to Martin Methodist’s Brenda Rique and Belén Salazar Yañez dropped a 7-5, 6-4, decision to Bethel’s Elena Fochs.

In doubles Shankar and Bou defeated Hannah Wampler and Marian Bogajo from the University of the Cumberlands, 8-5, and plays Campbellsville’s Nobile and Kaede Amano in the Round of 16.

Garijo Garrido and Landi won 8-3 versus Asbury’s Alejandra Mares and Kendall Jablonowski and takes on Campbellsville’s Bolor Enkhbayer and Rowe in the Round of 16, while Aguirre and Salazar Yañez lost 8-5 to Milligan’s Abby Allen and Hill.

The tournament runs through Sunday at Georgetown’s Lackey Tennis Center and also Lemons Mill Elementary School, both in Georgetown.
