LEBANON, Tenn. – Cumberland women’s tennis ranked 19th nationally in the NAIA Preseason Coaches’ Poll released last week by the national office, with CU moving up one spot from the end of last season.
Second-year head coach Karen Martinez returns five letterwinners from last season’s club that finished 13-11 overall, 3-3 in Mid-South Conference action. Cumberland received an at-large berth into the NAIA Championships, the program’s fifth all-time appearance in the national tournament, dropping a 5-4 decision to Middle Georgia State.
Junior Ainhoa Garijo Garrido garnered First Team All-America accolades, registering a 34-4 singles mark and a 22-12 doubles record in 2017-18. She continued her excellent play this fall, winning the ITA Southeast Regional singles title and posting a 9-4 singles mark.
Sophomore Marianela Landi collected Honorable Mention All-America honors for CU, finishing the 2017-18 campaign 19-14 in singles and 18-17 in doubles. Senior Joana Bou also earned Second Team All-Mid-South Conference recognition last season.
Cumberland was selected third in the Mid-South Conference Preseason Coaches’ Poll. The Phoenix take on Murray State in an exhibition on February 3, Austin Peay on Feb. 5 and Belmont on Feb. 23 before beginning the regular season Feb. 26 at home versus Tennessee Wesleyan at the Tommy Gray Memorial Courts.
