LEBANON, Tenn. – Mike Mandarino tossed a complete-game shutout and William Henderson plated the only run, as seventh-ranked Cumberland split a doubleheader, winning the second game 1-0 on Saturday at Brewton-Parker in Mt. Vernon, Ga.

The Bulldogs (2-1) dropped the opener, 4-2, with the Barons scoring four times in the fifth inning after CU held an early 2-0 advantage. Mandarino (1-0) helped the visitors to the doubleheader split, giving up four hits and three walks with three strikeouts in seven innings.

Brewton-Parker (3-4) left runners on first and third to end the game, as Eddie Peyton grounded out to end the game.

CU bounced into a pair of doubleplays in the latter innings, but Mandarino made the single run stand up, as Cumberland won 2-of-3 games over the weekend against the Barons.

Chipper Smith (0-1) suffered the loss in the opener for the Bulldogs despite retiring the first 13 batters of the game. The lefthander allowed four runs on four hits with five strikeouts in six innings.

BPC’s Joel McLaughlin (3-0) picked up the victory, giving up two runs on three hits with seven strikeouts in six innings. Ryan Raymer tossed a perfect seventh inning for his third save of the young season.

In the first inning of the opener, Cory Urquhart was hit by the pitch to leadoff the game and moved to second on a wild pickoff throw with two outs.Mandarino popped out to end the inning, but the ball was dropped and Urquhart came around to score for an early lead.

CU added to the lead in the fourth when Cody Ferrell led off with a shallow single and pinch-runner Ryan Critchelow moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Tyler Alford. Urquhart’s two-out double to deep rightcenter plated Critchelow for a 2-0 edge for the visitors.

The Barons broke through in the fifth, with a one-out single to left from Joseph Taylor breaking up Smith’s perfect game. Jacob Otwell was hit before a run-scoring double by Tony Voiro. Peyton then bunted but the Bulldogs were unable to get the runner at the plate, allowing a run to score and putting runners on the corners.

DeMontez Jones and Omar Artsen followed with consecutive run-scoring singles through the leftside, giving BPC a 4-2 lead. The bleeding finally stopped for the Bulldogs when Daniel Jones flied out to right and Artsen was forced out by Ferrell, ending the inning.
