LEBANON, Tenn. – Robert Gonzalez posted three hits and three RBIs and Cumberland scored six runs in the seventh and eighth innings in a 7-2 victory over Indiana-Southeast on Friday at Ernest L. Stockton Field-Woody Hunt Stadium.
The Bulldogs (3-1-1) plated six runs on six hits and the aid of one Grenadiers (2-1) error to take control of the contest. Gonzalez drove in a run with a groundout in the fifth, singled and scored in the seventh and plated the final two runs of the game with a triple in the eighth.
Evin Einhardt tossed six innings for CU, giving up one run on four hits with two walks and five strikeouts but got no decision. Kevin O. Greene picked up the win, allowing one run on two hits with three walks and two strikeouts in three innings.
Clay Hardesty worked 5.1 innings for IUS, giving up just two hits and one unearned run. Mason Lingafelter (0-1), the third of five Grenadiers hurlers, gave up four runs on four hits and did not get an out, taking the loss.
Indiana-Southeast scored the first run of the game in the third inning, with Carter Sibley drawing a leadoff walk before a sacrifice bunt by Marcus Howard. Frank Plustoka plated the run with a two-out single up the middle.
CU tied the contest in the fifth when Richie Seaton beat out an infield single between the plate and mound and went to second after the throw got away. Brodie Ross then walked and both runners moved up on a sac bunt from Tyler Alford. Seaton scored on a groundout by Gonzalez.
In the seventh Ross, Alford and Gonzalez all singled with one out against Lingafelter before an RBI single through the left side by Cory Urquhart. Josciel Veras then reached on an error by third baseman Sibley, allowing another run to come across, and Craig Monson’s groundout scored the final run of the inning for the Bulldogs.
IUS got one run back in the top of the eighth, as Joseph Mattingly drew a leadoff walk and Plustoka followed with a single. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch before Greene issued two more free passes, the second one to Brian Crider, forcing in a run. But Mychal Harris grounded into a 6-4-3 doubleplay the end the inning without any further damage.
In the bottom of the inning Daniel Harrison led off with a single and Ian Huss was hit. Gonzalez drove in both runs with a two-out triple down the rightfield line for the final margin.
Cumberland will host Union University in a doubleheader Saturday that begins at 11 a.m. at Ernest L. Stockton Field-Woody Hunt Stadium.
