Bulldogs fall 4-2 at AUM

LEBANON, Tenn. – Cumberland tied the game in the top of the eighth but Shelby Nobles and Wes Hughes each drove in runs with two outs in the bottom of the inning, leading 18th-ranked Auburn Montgomery to a 4-2 win over the Bulldogs on Sunday afternoon in Montgomery, Ala.

Cory Urquhart singled to start the eighth for Cumberland (5-2-1), went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Josciel Veras and third on a wild pitch before scoring on a groundout by Tyler Alford, knotting the contest at two.

But the Warhawks (8-5) scored twice in the bottom of the inning, as Blake Bearden singled to leadoff and Hayden Hillyer was hit with one out. With two outs Nobles singled to leftcenter, plating pinch-runner Blake Woo, and Hughes followed with an RBI single to left, scoring Hillyer.

That made a winner of Patrick Devault (2-0), who allowed two runs on five hits in eight innings, walking five and striking out five. Daniel Farrar gave up a single but struck out two to pick up his first save of the year in the ninth.

Nick Conley tossed seven innings in the start for the Bulldogs, allowing two runs on eight hits with three walks and one strikeout. Jesse Coe (0-1) suffered the loss, giving up two runs on three hits in his one inning of work.

Urquhart collected two hits and scored a run while Veras and Alford drove in CU’s two runs in the contest.

Cumberland took an early lead with a run in the first, as Craig Monson and Urquhart each singled to start the contest. The runners moved up on a wild pitch and Monson scored on a groundout by Veras.

AUM tied the game in the second when Turner walked and Hillyer followed with a double. Nobles flied out to center with one out for a sacrifice fly.

In the third Branden Kelley led off with a single and moved to second on a groundout by Josh Thompson. He scored on a two-out single to center by Turner for a 2-1 Warhawks advantage.

The Bulldogs had just two baserunners over the next four innings against Devault – an error in the fourth and a walk in the sixth. The righthander retired 14 of 16 batters from the end of the third inning through the seventh.

The two teams meet again Monday at 3 p.m. and the Bulldogs take on ninth-ranked Faulkner University on Tuesday at Noon on the three-game road trip to Montgomery.
