Collier goes the distance in 4-1 victory
Jake Collier tossed a complete game Tuesday at Faulkner, giving up one run on seven hits in a 4-1 victory.

LEBANON, Tenn. – Jake Collier tossed a complete game, scattering seven hits and striking out five, while Craig Monson and Robert Gonzalez each collected two hits and Monson added a two-run single in the ninth inning in Cumberland’s 4-1 victory Tuesday over No. 9 Faulkner University in Montgomery, Ala.

Collier (1-0) retired the final 10 batters of the game and worked out of jams in the second, fourth, fifth and sixth innings, three times retiring Luis Sanchez with a pair of runners on base and getting a line drive doubleplay to end another frame. The righthander walked three and kept the Eagles hitters at bay, allowing just one extra-base hit, a double to Dauris Holguin in the second inning.

Gonzalez reached on an error and scored in the first inning and then doubled and scored on Monson’s single in the ninth, as the Bulldogs (6-3-1) added insurance runs in the final inning for Collier. Cumberland collected 10 hits but stranded 12 runners in the game, including the bases loaded in the first and ninth innings and two in the fourth and sixth.

The loss ended a nine-game winning streak for the Eagles (12-2), who left eight people on base. Faulkner starter Tyler Carter (0-2) took the loss, giving up two runs on five hits with one walk and eight strikeouts in five innings. Three relievers worked the final four innings, with Justin Hallmark allowing two runs on three hits in the ninth inning.

Holguin was the only Faulkner player with two hits – his double in the second and a single in the sixth.

Cumberland started the game well, with Gonzalez reaching on an error by third baseman Sergio Sanchez. He moved to second on a passed ball and scored on a double by Cory Urquhart. Monson reached on an infield single and Ian Huss walked to load the bases, but Richie Seaton struck out and Chris Hall grounded out to end the inning with just one run.

Faulkner tied the game in the second when Holguin doubled with one out and Michael Cruz followed with an RBI single, but Collier induced a pair of groundouts to end the inning without any further damage.

In the fourth Seaton led off with a double, went to third on a groundout by Tyler Anderson and scored on a wild pitch.

The Eagles got singles from Ethan Williams and a walk to Esteban Paula in the fourth, but Luis Sanchez lined out to end the inning. In the fifth Zak Colby and Sergio Sanchez each singled with one out, but David Bishop lined into a doubleplay to end the inning.

Hall singled for the Bulldogs in the sixth and stole second and third. Tyler Alford walked with two outs but Gonzalez flied out to rightcenter to end the threat.

In the bottom of the inning Holguin singled with one out and Paula singled with two outs, but Luis Sanchez ended the inning again, this time with a fly out to leftcenter.

Cumberland added two runs in the ninth after Gonzalez doubled to rightcenter with one out and Josciel Veras singled through the leftside, putting runners on the corners. Urquhart walked, loading the bases, before Monson’s two-run single down the rightfield line.

Cumberland begins Mid-South Conference play this weekend with a three-game series against 20th-ranked Georgetown College. The two teams play a single game Friday at 2 p.m. and a doubleheader Saturday at Noon at Ernest L. Stockton Field-Woody Hunt Stadium.
