Gomez named Preseason All-American
Anthony Gomez posted an 11-1 record with a 1.16 ERA last season, earning Preseason All-America honors.

LEBANON, Tenn. – Cumberland’s Anthony Gomez was named a 2014 NAIA Baseball Preseason All-American on Monday, as selected by the NAIA-Baseball Coaches Association (NAIA-BCA) All-America Committee and announced by the national office.

The Norwalk, Calif., native posted an 11-1 record with a 1.16 earned-run-average in 14 appearances covering 93.0 innings of work last season. The lefthander gave up just 63 hits with 37 walks and 51 strikeouts, winning his first 10 decisions.

He allowed zero or one earned run in 11 of his 14 appearances and tossed five complete games with three shutouts. Gomez worked seven or more innings on eight occasions, including nine-inning shutouts versus Union University and UVA-Wise. He gave up just three hits in nine innings versus Georgetown College and worked 7.2 scoreless frames against St. Catharine College.

Gomez allowed one earned run in eight innings at Tennessee Wesleyan and one run in nine innings at Campbellsville University during the regular season. He tossed 10 shutout frames versus Campbellsville in the Mid-South Conference Championships, giving up just five total baserunners in 10 innings in the contest.

Opponents batted just .195 against Gomez last season and he ended the year ranked fifth nationally in ERA and tied for ninth in victories. He was an Honorable Mention All-America selection at the end of last year, becoming the 61st All-American in program history. The Bulldogs have posted at least one All-American in each of the last four seasons, including Matt Greener, Kris Miller, Troy Frazier, Shawn Schaefer and Aaron Wilkerson in 2010; Wilkerson, Mike Mandarino and Will Locante in 2011; and Mandarino in 2012.
