Long-time fan Louie Payton dies

LEBANON, Tenn. – Cumberland University regrets to announce the passing of Bulldog “super fan” Louie Payton in Nashville on Wednesday after an extended illness. Payton was a regular at Cumberland sporting events and really anywhere on campus for 30-plus years.

“I couldn’t tell you how many times he threw out the first pitch for us,” long-time baseball coach Woody Hunt said. “He loved Cumberland and Cumberland loved him right back. We could all learn a lesson or two from Louie. He was a loving, trusting soul.”

Born July 28, 1951, in Wilson County, he was the son of the late William Lee and Doris Braden Pennington Payton. He is survived by his sister, Johnie Payton, and brothers, Billy and Michael Payton.

Funeral services will take place this Friday at Noon at Ligon & Bobo Funeral Home in Lebanon. Interment will follow at Wilson County Memorial Gardens. Visitation is Thursday from 2-8 p.m. and Friday after 10 a.m. at Ligon & Bobo.
