Bulldogs split opening day doubleheader
Richie Seaton recorded four hits and scored twice as the Bulldogs split an opening day series with Auburn Montgomery

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Senior Richie Seaton collected four hits in a pair of games and senior Kevin P. Greene provided six innings of work as the Cumberland baseball team opened the season with a 7-1 victory against Auburn Montgomery, but allowed three errors in the first inning of game two, a 2-1 defeat, to split a doubleheader here Friday at the AUM Baseball Complex.

It took exactly three batters for Cumberland (1-1) to get on the board to open the 2014 season. Following back-to-back singles from Chris Hall and Justin Byrd set up a first and third situation with no outs. Sam Lind followed with a bouncer which the Warhawks turned into a double play, but Hall scampered home to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead.

Auburn Montgomery (4-2) answered in the second with a run, but CU retook the lead in the fourth. Byrd set the table with a double to open the inning and advanced to third on a passed ball. Lind knocked in his first RBI of the season with a sacrifice fly.

The Bulldogs broke the game open in the fifth with a four run frame. With one away, Richie Seaton singled an advanced to second on a fielding error. Following a walk for Josciel Veras, Tyler Alford delivered with an RBI double.

Hall added an RBI single and Zach Cole, running for Alford, scored on a wild pitch. Lind concluded the rally with another sac fly to right field, his second RBI of the game. Seaton added another run for CU in the top of the sixth on a two-out RBI single to push the score to 7-1 where it would conclude.

Keven P. Greene (1-0) pitched a solid six innings in his first outing of the season, allowing just six hits and an earned run. The Port St. Lucie, Fla., native struck out one and walked three.

Cumberland realized its opening weekend yips in the first inning of game two, as three Bulldog errors led to two runs for the Warhawks.

The Bulldogs would not answer until the fifth inning as Hall plated his second run of the season. Seaton reached on an error to start the stanza and Veras followed with a single. A perfect sacrifice bunt from Bryan Haney set the table for Hall, who promptly lifted a fly ball to center for the sac fly.

A walk and a single in the sixth put Cumberland in position for a chance to tie the contest, but AUM relieve Daniel Farrar was able to induce a fly ball from Veras to end the threat. Farrar closed the game in the eighth with a strikeout of Lind to close out the 2-1 win.

Cumberland closes the weekend with a pair of games Saturday versus Missouri Baptist and Faulkner University. The first game is set for noon.
