BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Chris Erker tossed eight-plus shutout innings, working in-and-out of trouble in the early innings, and Lindsey Wilson scored an unearned run in the third and an insurance run in the eighth in a 2-0 victory over Cumberland in the winner’s bracket final here Friday in the Mid-South Conference Baseball Championships.
With the loss the Bulldogs (20-30) must win three games in the next two days to win the tournament and advance to the postseason. CU plays Saturday at 1 p.m. against the winner of Friday’s late game between St. Catharine College and the University of Pikeville.
Cumberland put two runners on base in each of the first four innings against Erker (6-5) but was unable to push a run across. The lefthander allowed five hits, walked three, hit two batters and stranded nine runners in his eight frames, inducing a pair of doubleplays to get out of jams. CU was 0-for-11 in the contest with runners in scoring position.
Jake Collier (4-7) suffered the tough-luck loss, giving up one earned run on seven hits in eight innings. He walked one and struck out four.
Edgar Lebron and Alex Bautista each collected two hits for the Blue Raiders (36-17), who advance to the championship round on Saturday at 4 p.m.
Phil Stiles led off the game for Cumberland with a walk but Hector Viera grounded into a doubleplay. Justin Byrd was then hit but Tyler Alford grounded out to end the inning. In the second Jonathan Larson and Ryan Simmons both singled but Eddie McDaniels grounded out as well for the third out.
Viera reached on an error with one out in the third and Byrd was hit again before popouts by Alford and Ryan Dickison ended the threat.
The Blue Raiders broke through with a run in the third when Ryan Harper led off with a single up the middle and Russ Morse reached on a sacrifice bunt attempt. A groundout put runners on first and third and Collier’s pickoff throw to first got away, allowing Harper to score the unearned run for LWC.
Larson walked to start the CU fourth and McDaniels singled with two outs, but Stiles grounded out to end the inning.
The Bulldogs had their best chance to tie the game in the sixth when Dickison doubled to rightcenter to start the frame and went to third on a sac bunt by Larson. Conor Dishman popped out and Simmons grounded out to end the inning with the Blue Raiders clinging to the 1-0 edge.
Lindsey Wilson added an insurance run in the eighth, with Morse singling through the left side to start the inning and taking second on a sac bunt by Brandon Munoz. Lebron’s infield single put runners on the corners before an RBI single by Alex Bautista made it 2-0 LWC.
