LEBANON, Tenn. – Bo Saunders posted three hits, four RBIs and three runs scored, Jose Vera hit a three-run homer and Eddie McDaniels and Bentley Jones added three hits apiece in Cumberland’s 14-3 victory over Lindsey Wilson in baseball action Friday in Columbia, Ky.

Cumberland and the Blue Raiders finish the series with a Noon doubleheader Saturday.

Saunders singled, doubled and homered and the Phoenix (18-9, 3-1 Mid-South) scored four runs in the fourth and sixth innings and three in the fifth to break open the contest. CU pounded out 18 hits, six of those for extra bases, including home runs from Vera, Saunders and Schmidt.

Polo Portela (5-0) allowed three runs on nine hits, two of those solo homers, in the complete game, walking one and striking out four. The righthander stranded eight Lindsey Wilson (5-16, 1-3) runners, including two in the third and fifth innings, and recorded just one 1-2-3 frame.

Vera, LaDarius Williams, Schmidt and Peyton Wheatley each collected two hits for CU.

Lindsey Wilson starter Kelvin Guzman (1-5) took the loss, allowing nine runs on 13 hits with five strikeouts in 4.1 innings.

Cumberland got on the board with two runs in the second inning, starting with a single up the middle by Kyle Blackwell, who went to second on a balk and third on a groundout by Tyler Jones. With two outs Saunders belted a two-run homer to left, his first of the season.

Schmidt’s solo homer to right, his seventh of the year, put the Phoenix ahead, 3-0.

The Blue Raiders got a run back in the bottom of the inning when Jordan Gardner and Derek Marrufo both singled and Steven Calderon walked, loading the bases. Seth Price’s sacrifice fly pulled LWC within 3-1.

Saunders started a two-out rally in the fourth inning for CU with a single and a stolen base. McDaniels singled, putting runners on the corners, before an RBI single by Bentley Jones. Vera then drilled a three-run homer to right, extending the CU advantage to 7-1.

Chris Koutsoubos hit a no-doubter home run to left with two outs in the bottom of the frame for the Blue Raiders, but it was a solo shot against Portela.

The Phoenix added to the lead in the fifth, starting when Tyler Jones was hit and Wheatley doubled down the leftfield line. Saunders plated both runners with a double and McDaniels walked before a bunt single from Bentley Jones loaded the bases. Vera’s groundout pushed across Saunders for a 10-2 CU lead.

Cumberland loaded the bases in the sixth with a single from Schmidt, a walk to Blackwell and a hit batter by Tyler Jones. Wheatley’s single to rightcenter scored two and after a walk to Saunders, McDaniels’ single and a sac fly from Bentley Jones plated runs for a 14-2 advantage.

Calderon’s solo homer to right with two outs in the seventh provided the final run for the Blue Raiders.
