LEBANON, Tenn. -- 74 Cumberland University student-athletes were named 2020-21 NAIA Scholar-Athletes and 12 Phoenix teams earned NAIA Scholar-Team distinctions, NAIA officials announced on Wednesday as part of the NAIA National Awards Day.
In order to be nominated a student-athlete must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and must have achieved junior academic status. Teams must post a minimum team GPA of 3.00.
Baseball led the way for the Phoenix with 18 honorees while football each had 12 scholar-athletes. Softball and women's soccer each had nine and women's tennis had seven.
Cumberland had 12 teams earn NAIA Scholar-Team honors: women's golf, women's cross country, women's tennis, men's golf, women's soccer, men's tennis, women's volleyball, softball, men's soccer, baseball, women's basketball, and men's cross country.
Over 11,000 student-athletes and over 2,000 teams in the NAIA earned the award.
