COLUMBIA, Ky. – Moses Cornelius rushed 25 times for 111 yards and two touchdowns but 14th-ranked Lindsey Wilson tossed four touchdown passes and turned three Cumberland turnovers into 21 points in a 55-27 victory here Saturday at Blue Raider Stadium.
Cumberland (3-8, 0-5 Mid-South West) jumped out to a 14-0 lead and trailed 21-20 at the half. Lindsey Wilson (8-2, 3-2) ran the Tennessee Titans Homerun Throwback play on the opening kickoff of the second half, with Josh Haney returning the kickoff 81 yards for the score. Haney also had a 39-yard TD run after a Tony Brackins, Jr., interception.
LWC quarterbacks Dylan Beasley and Zak Mizell combined to complete 17-of-27 passes for 210 yards and three touchdowns while Michael Case tossed a 40-yard TD as well on a trick play in the fourth quarter. Haney rushed six times for 94 yards and a score. CU picked off two passes, both by DeAnthony Patrick in the first quarter.
Cumberland’s Justin Snyder finished 19-of-44 passing for 250 yards and one TD. He tossed a pair of interceptions and the Bulldogs also fumbled once, with the Blue Raiders converting all three of those miscues into the touchdowns, including a nine-yard fumble return for a TD by Michael Brooks just before the half that gave the home team the lead for good.
Cornelius scored on runs of four and two yards and carried 53 times for 255 yards and three touchdowns over the last two games of the season.
Cumberland pulled out the whole bag of tricks in the first half, starting on the opening drive with a fake punt. Joseph Rushin carried right up the middle 51 yards to the LWC4 and Cornelius barreled in from there on the next play for a 7-0 CU lead with 12:24 left in the opening period.
Patrick intercepted a pair of Blue Raider passes in the first quarter and returned the second one to the LWC36. Cornelius carried three times for 20 yards but CU was stopped inside the 10. On fourth down the Bulldogs went into the bag of tricks again, with Austin Chaplin tossing a six-yard half-back pass to Michael Green for a touchdown and a 14-0 advantage two plays into the second quarter.
Lindsey Wilson put together its best drive of the opening half on the ensuing possession, going 75 yards on 11 plays. LWC converted three third downs on the drive, the last one a 17-yard completion from Beasley to Jay Gaudlock. Beasley hit Carmetrick Ross for 18 yards on the next play for the TD, cutting the CU lead in half.
Trey Wright stepped in front of Marcus Bryson and intercepted a Snyder pass on CU’s next possession, with Wright juggling the ball before pulling it in for the INT. Three plays later Jalen Sublett carried the final two yards for the score, tying the game at 14 with 7:32 left in the second period.
Snyder hit a streaking Green for 64 yards down the left sideline on second down for Cumberland on the ensuing drive and three plays later found Brandon Mallory in the flat. The senior reached the ball for the pylon as he was being tackled for the touchdown, his fifth of the year. The PAT was no good and CU led 20-14.
Another turnover late in the half helped the Blue Raiders take the lead, with Justin Wade tackling Snyder from behind near the CU goalline. The sack caused a fumble and Brooks picked it up at the nine, ran to his right into an official, but bounced off him and scored the TD. The PAT was good for a 21-20 Lindsey Wilson lead with 2:01 left in the half.
Green’s 14-yard catch and a facemask penalty on LWC helped Cumberland move to the Blue Raider 29, but Matthew Alter’s 46-yard field goal was blocked by James Hill on the final play of the half.
Cory Davenport received the opening kickoff of the second half on the right side of the field, took one step forward and threw all the way back to the left. Haney received the throw at the 19 and weaved his way down the sideline for the score and a 28-20 LWC advantage.
Haney scored on the 39-yard run on the first play after the Brackins interception midway through the third quarter and an eight-play, 68-yard drive that ended with a two-yard TD pass from Mizell to Josh Durham extended the lead to 42-20.
Cumberland only score of the second half came early in the fourth quarter, a 12-play, 76-yard drive. Cornelius rushed four times for 18 yards and caught an 11-yard pass on the possession. His two-yard run cut the deficit to 48-27.
