Five players in double figures in CU victory

LEBANON, Tenn. – Brandon Springer scored 19 points and Kenneth Simms added 18 points and eight rebounds, as seventh-ranked Cumberland shot 64 percent from the field en route to a 104-69 victory over Blue Mountain College in men’s basketball action Thursday in Blue Mountain, Miss.
 
Cumberland (18-2, 8-1 TSAC) had 11 different players score in the win, the team’s seventh straight triumph, with five players in double figures. Jamar Finley netted 16 points, while Brandon Powell posted 12 and Channing Tucker had 10.
 
Cumberland shot an astounding 73 percent (30-for-41) in the first half from the field, taking a 71-52 edge into the break. Simms was a perfect 7-of-7 from the floor for 14 points and Finley added 10 in the half, as 11 different Bulldogs scored in the opening 20 minutes.
 
CU also outscored BMC, 18-0, in points off turnovers, as the Toppers committed 10 miscues in the period.
 
Blue Mountain hit eight 3-pointers in the half, including three from Jon Estes, who scored 13 points. Josh Southward added 10 points for the Toppers.
 
In the second half Cumberland put together a 20-9 run to open the half and never looked back. The Bulldogs scored 70 points in the paint during the contest and got 44 points off the bench. Estes led the Toppers (2-20, 1-9) with 15 points in the game.
 
Cumberland continues its current four-game road swing Saturday at Freed-Hardeman at 4 p.m. The Bulldogs return home Saturday, February 7 versus Mid-Continent.
