Douglas posts career milestone in victory

LEBANON, Tenn. – Senior Thomas Douglas scored his 1,000th point and Brandon Springer netted a team-best 19 points and had eight rebounds in 19th-ranked Cumberland’s 71-47 victory at Fisk Tuesday night in Nashville.
The Bulldogs (6-1) used a balanced attack with three double-figure scorers and shot 55 percent from the field for their fourth straight victory. Douglas posted 17 points, giving the Rock Hill, S.C., native 1,001 points during his three-year career at Cumberland.
Kenneth Simms added 13 points while Ahmed Abdelhamid grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds with six points for the Bulldogs.
CU took a 32-19 advantage at intermission after limiting Fisk to just 37 percent shooting and forcing 11 turnovers. Springer, Douglas and Simms all had seven points at the break.
In the second half the Bulldogs forced 15 more turnovers by Fisk and Springer and Thomas got hot from the field, netting 12 and 10 points, respectively. CU was an important 9-for-12 from the foul line.
Cumberland won the battle of the boards in the game, 35-21. Douglas hit three of the team’s four 3-pointers in the contest to reach his career plateau.
CU takes on Montevallo on the road Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in an exhibition before opening TranSouth Conference action next week, hosting Blue Mountain College on Thursday, December 4.
