Cumberland picks up first win
LEBANON, Tenn. – Brandon Springer’s third straight double-double and Lamar Brinkley’s 23 points lifted Cumberland University to its first win of the season Monday night in Nashville, Tenn.
On the strength of 73.6 percent shooting from the floor, the Bulldogs (1-3) jumped out to a 16-point lead at the intermission and added another 18 points to their lead in the second half en route to a 97-63 win.
Cumberland held Fisk to 38 percent shooting in the contest, including 32 percent in the first half, during which CU built a 39-23 lead.
Springer, who shot 9-of-11 Monday, has been accurate on 21 of his last 24 shots, dating back to last Tuesday’s loss to Oakwood University. The preseason All-American out of Hunters Lane High School finished with 20 points and 11 rebounds in just 22 minutes.
Brinkley, a redshirt freshman from Nashville, Tenn., went 9-of-10 from the floor and scored a game-high 23 points. Adrian Williamson and Walter Simon contributed 19 and 14 points, respectively.
The Bulldogs return to action Wednesday at 7 p.m., hosting Talladega College at the Dallas Floyd Recreation Center in their last home contest until the Rosa Stokes Classic, which begins Dec. 11.
