Scoring streaks lead to victory in TSAC opener

LEBANON, Tenn. – Lamar Brinkley tied his season-high with 18 points and Cumberland started both halves with big run, cruising to an 89-72 victory over Lyon College in men’s basketball action Thursday night in Batesville, Ark.

The Bulldogs (9-3, 1-0 TranSouth) opened the contest with an 18-6 spurt and put together a 15-4 run to begin the second half. Brinkley netted eight of the team’s first 10 points in the game and was 6-of-9 from the field and 6-for-6 at the foul line for his game-high point total.

The second-half run gave the Bulldogs a 56-36 advantage and Lyon never pulled within single digits the rest of the way. All 14 Cumberland players scored in the victory in the conference opener for both teams. Michael Sweat added 12 points and seven rebounds in the win, Kyle Upton scored seven and Daniel McFadden posted seven points.

CJ Blount led the Scots with 16 points and Daniel Cowart added 14. Kendall Leeks and Rickey Thomas each netted 10 for the home team.

The Bulldogs made nine of their first 13 shots from the field en route to a 21-8 advantage nine minutes into the contest. The Scots cut into the deficit but never pulled closer than seven the rest of the half. Sweat finished the scoring in the period with just his second field goal with 37 seconds left, giving CU a 41-32 advantage at intermission.

Cumberland hosts 17th-ranked Freed-Hardeman on Saturday at 4 p.m. in the home conference opener.
