BLUE MOUNTAIN, Miss. – Lamar Brinkley posted 17 points and 10 rebounds and Cumberland shot 52 percent from the field in recording a 73-66 victory here Thursday night at Blue Mountain College in men’s basketball action.
The Bulldogs (17-7, 7-4 TranSouth) won their fourth straight game overall and fifth in the last six outings. CU knocked down eight 3-pointers in the contest, three by Josh Pierce, who finished with 12 points.
Cumberland started quickly and led by as many 10 points in the first half, but BMC closed the period with a 9-2 spurt, cutting the deficit to 32-30 at the break. A 12-2 spurt early in the second half pushed the CU advantage to 46-36 with 11:24 to play.
The Bulldogs led by as many as 17 later in the period, with Brinkley netting 10 of his 17 points after the break.
Jarvis Fisher nearly kept the Toppers (7-16, 0-11) in the game single-handedly, posting a game-high 27 points on 11-for-14 shooting with three 3-pointers. Shane Butler added 12 points for BMC, who scored the final seven points of the game to make the final score closer than it really was.
Michael Sweat finished with 14 points and six boards and Daniel McFadden added 10 points off the bench for CU.
Cumberland hosts rival Trevecca Nazarene on Saturday at 4 p.m. in the second game of a stretch where the Bulldogs will play five games in 10 days.
