XC women place third, men fifth at Rio Grande

LEBANON, Tenn. – Keaton Gaffney, Meghan White and Musheda Ali Haji placed 10-11-12 in the women’s race and William Scheve led the men’s team with a 19th-place finish, leading the Cumberland cross country teams at the 42nd Annual Patty Forgey Invitational in Rio Grande, Ohio.

The women finished third among five teams, placing all five runners in the Top 20, while the men were fifth among seven teams with three finishers in the Top 25.

Gaffney, a freshman from Mt. Juliet, Tenn., finished 10th for the women in 24:46 on the 5K course. White, a senior from Springfield, Tenn., and Ali Haji, a junior from Nashville, Tenn., were 11th and 12th, respectively, with times of 24:58 and 25:25, while junior and Smyrna, Tenn., native Shelby Oglesby placed 15th (25:55) and Lebanon freshman Chelsea Reeves was 19th (27:27).

Scheve, a senior from Hamilton, Ohio, was the top finisher for the Bulldog men in 32:59 on the 8K course. Freshman Nathan Berget, a Clarksville, Tenn., native, placed 21st in 33:17, while Scottsboro, Ala., sophomore Tyler Shankles posted a 25th-place showing in 34:26. Senior and Springfield, Tenn., native Zach Shelton was 29th (36:05) and sophomore Devin Rickard (36:05; Maryville, Tenn.) and sophomore David Cheers (38:38; Middleton, Tenn.) were 33rd and 39th, respectively.

Cumberland races again next Saturday at the 22nd Annual Rhodes College Invitational in Memphis, Tenn.
