Gaffney, Harp pace CU harriers at Commodore Classic

LEBANON, Tenn. – Freshman Tanner Harp and sophomore Keaton Gaffney both placed 64th, leading the Cumberland cross country teams in their second meet of the season on Saturday at the Commodore Classic at Percy Warner Park in Nashville.

Harp posted an 8K time of 29:19.90 and was the top finisher for the second straight outing for the Bulldogs. Freshman Garang Madut was the second CU harrier to cross the finish line, recording a time of 31:07.99, and finishing 72nd overall.

Freshmen Richie Palmeiri (32:09.16) and Spencer Rearick (32:36.89) registered 76th and 79th-place showings, respectively, while juniors David Cheers (81st, 34:10.53), Devin Rickard (83rd, 34:24.76) and Tyler Shankles (88th, 39:15.34) rounded out the Cumberland continent.

Gaffney and fellow frosh Alesa Steiner led the Bulldog women for the second straight meet as well, with Gaffney recording a 5K time of 21:28.97 and Steiner coming in 75th with a time of 23:36.21.

Freshman Zeddy Koech, who missed the team’s first race two weeks ago, was right behind Steiner with a time of 23:36.98. Senior Candice Ray (84th, 26:35.13) and sophomore Chelsea Reeves (85th, 26:47.28) were the final two CU participants.

Cumberland next competes in the 43rd Annual Patty Forgey Invitational on September 28 in Rio Grande, Ohio, on the course that will host the Mid-South Conference Championships on November 9.
