HUNTSVILLE, Ala.--The Cumberland men's cross country team ran their way to a sixth-place finish at the UAH Chargers XC Invitational hosted by the University of Alabama-Huntsville this morning in their first meet of the season.
The Phoenix were led by sophomore Denis Kiplagat who took 37th place in a time of 26:17.20. With that time, Kiplagat set a personal record and the seventh-best time in program history. The next Phoenix to cross the finish line was Joel Barlow in 46th place with a time of 26:44.88 followed by freshman Ethan Rhoden in 57th place 27:12.64 and freshman Aidan Crockett in 64th with a time of 27:51.77.
Transfer Georget Pontillo finished in 85th at 28:33.92. Daniel Taurus came in 106th place (29:48.79) with teammate Andrew Cullins finishing just seconds behind in 107th place (29:54.99) and Carlos Angeles-Solis came in 120th with 32:25.33 to round out the meet for Cumberland. It was the first 8K race for newcomers Ethan Rhoden, Aidan Crockett, Georget Pontillo and Andrew Cullins.
Cumberland finished ahead of both NAIA opponents which were Point University and Blue Mountain College. The Phoenix will be back on the course on October 3rd when they travel to Louisville, Ky. for the 'Live in Lou' Louisville Cross Country Classic.
