Cumberland wins CU Fall Invitational

LEBANON, Tenn. – Cumberland’s men’s golf team won a tournament it hosted and tied for fourth in its other fall event, as head coach Scott Wilkerson has received consistent play from his upperclassmen and some excellent scores from two freshmen during fall action for the Bulldogs.

In the team’s opening event September 15-16, the Mid-South Conference Fall Invitational at Dale Hollow Lake State Park in Burkesville, Ky., the team tied for fourth overall. The field included host and 22nd-ranked Lindsey Wilson, Campbellsville, the University of the Cumberlands, Indiana Wesleyan, Georgetown, Pikeville, St. Catherines, Union and West Virginia Tech. More than half of the teams in the tournament were ranked in the Top 25 at one point last season.

Senior and captain Benton Hart, senior Josh Young, sophomore Austin Whitmer and freshmen Guy Nardo and Dustin Thomas.

After day one, the Bulldogs (293) found themselves one shot off the lead behind the stellar play of Josh Young (-3), Nardo (+1) and Thomas (+1). The team struggled at the start of day two but Young, Nardo and Benton Hart helped the squad to the fourth-place finish. Young was selected to the All-Tournament Team.

Cumberland won the CU Fall Invitational on September 19 at The Legacy, a Raymond Floyd designed course in Springfield, Tenn. CU, Trevecca, Union and Martin Methodist, all members of Region XI and the TranSouth Confernece, each had two or more teams at the one-day, 18-hole event.

Young and Whitmer both shot event par, leading the Bulldogs White Team, while Nardo (74), Hart (79) and Thomas (82) helped the White shoot a team score of 297, winning the event by six strokes.

Cumberland will take on Trevecca in a dual match on October 2 at Windtree Golf Club in Mt. Juliet, Tenn.
