Garrett leads Bulldogs with opening round 76

LEBANON, Tenn. – Freshman Austin Garrett fired a first-round 76, tying for 16th overall Monday at the Indian Bayou Classic at Indian Bayou Golf Club in Destin, Fla.

The Univ. of North Alabama is the host school for the event, which features six NCAA Division II schools and only four NAIA institutions. Cumberland is 13th out of 14 teams in just the second event of the fall for the Bulldogs.

Garrett posted by far his best round of the fall, shooting 37-39 on the 7,078-yard, par-72 course. The Smithville, Tenn., native is six shots behind leaders Joey Bradley (Trevecca Nazarene) and Rourke van der Spuy (Columbus State) heading into Tuesday’s final round.

Junior Paul Vaughn and senior Austin Whitmer carded rounds of 82 and 83, respectively, shooting 37-45 and 42-41 in their round. Vaughan is tied for 56th and Whitmer is tied for 59th.

Juniors Guy Nardo (85) and Dustin Thomas (87) round out the Bulldog contingent.
