LEBANON, Tenn. – Cumberland won four of the five morning four-ball matches and then staved off an early comeback in the afternoon singles matches, defeating Union University, 10 ½-6 ½, in a match play event Saturday at Windtree Golf Club in Mt. Juliet, Tenn. Each match in both morning and afternoon sessions was worth one point, with five four-ball matches and 10 singles matches in the one-day event.

Cumberland started strong on a very windy and cool day, taking four of the five four-ball matches in the morning, including two very easily.

Guy Nardo and Dustin Thomas defeated Ryan Chandler and Matt Kelley, 3 and 2, in the first match, and Christian Spicer and Simon Beck prevailed, 5 and 4, in the fourth match against UU’s David Hopper and Tyler Lay.

The other three matches came down to the final hole, with all three teams winning 1 up.

CU’s Austin Garrett and Ryan Gammons held on to defeat Micah Gentle and Steven Coffelt in the second match, and Caleb Evans and Ryan Brewer won by the same score in the third match over Jake Carroll and Ryan Mantooth. Union’s Brett Barry and Ben Waits won 1 up against Austin Whitmer and Paul Vaughan in the final pairing.

In the afternoon singles, Union squared the match at four with singles victories in the first two matches, but Cumberland won six of the final seven pairings, halving the other.

Barry defeated Thomas, 1 up, and Hopper did the same against Brewer. Chandler took care of Nardo, 3 and 2, leveling the match at four.

But three big victories for the Bulldogs set the tone the rest of the way, with Gammons taking a 6 and 4 decision over Carroll, Spicer defeating Lay, 4 and 3, and Beck prevailing 3 and 2 against Mantooth. Vaughan won 2 and 1 over Coffelt, while Whitmer defeated Gentle and Evans got past Wait by identical 1 up scores. Garrett and Kelly halved their match.

Cumberland will play in the TSU Big Blue Intercollegiate this Monday and Tuesday at King’s Creek Golf Club in Spring Hill, Tenn. The Bulldogs will play 36 holes on Monday and 18 holes on Tuesday against Tennessee State, Savannah State, UT Martin, Murray State, John A.
