Garrett fourth, Whitmer fifth at CU Invite

LEBANON, Tenn. – Freshman Austin Garrett fired a first-round 70 and is fourth overall while senior Austin Whitmer carded a 71 and is tied for fifth on Friday at the Cumberland Spring Invitational at Windtree Golf Club in Mt. Juliet, Tenn.

Garrett tied his career-best score with the two-under 70 on the par-72, 6557-yard course. The Smithville, Tenn., native trails Union University’s Ryan Chandler by two shots and a pair of other golfers by one shot for the overall lead.

Whitmer was just one shot off his career-best for the Bulldogs with a one-under 71. Sophomores Caleb Evans and Ryan Gammons posted rounds of 73 and 74, respectively, tied for ninth and 11th, while junior Dustin Thomas and sophomore Simon Beck both carded rounds of 75, tied for 13th.

Freshman Christian Spicer is 18th after a first-round 77 and sophomore Zack Brewer is one shot back, tied for 19th. Juniors Guy Nardo and Paul Vaughan both struggled a bit, shooting 79, tied for 21st.
