LEBANON, Tenn. – Junior Dustin Thomas carded a second-round 70, tying for fifth, and freshman Austin Garrett tied for third individually, leading the Cumberland men’s golf team Saturday at the CU Spring Invitational at Windtree Golf Club in Mt. Juliet, Tenn.

Thomas and Bryan College’s Dean Hoare were the only players under par on Saturday, both firing a two-under 70 on the par-72, 6557-yard course. Hoare won a playoff with Martin Methodist’s Joseph Rackley for individual medalist honors at two-under par 142.

Thomas finished the two rounds at one-over par 145, while Garrett shot a second-round 74, concluding the tournament at even-par 144.

Sophomore Caleb Evans placed ninth overall with a two-round score of 149 after a second-round 76, while senior Austin Whitmer finished 10th, one shot behind Evans, and junior Guy Nardo tied for 12th at 152. Sophomores Ryan Gammons and Simon Beck were in a group of five golfers tied for 15th at 154, while freshman Christian Spicer placed 21st (157), sophomore Zach Brewer tied for 22nd (158) and junior Paul Vaughan tied for 26th (162).

The Bulldogs shot the low score of the day in the team competition with an eight-over 296 but finished eight strokes behind Union University.

Cumberland plays again April 22-23 at the Union University Spring Invitational at Ross Creek Landing Golf Club in Clifton, Tenn.
