LEBANON, Tenn. – Cumberland junior Dustin Thomas shot three-under par 68 to take the overall lead and freshman Austin Garrett carded a one-under 70, leading the Bulldogs in the opening round Thursday of the TranSouth Men’s Golf Championships at Blytheville Country Club in Blytheville, Ark. The Bulldogs posted a team score of 283 and lead Union University by 11 shots.

Thomas was just one shot from his career-best at CU and leads Garrett by two strokes and a host of four golfers, including Bulldog Paul Vaughan, by three shots. Garrett tied his career-best at Cumberland with the 70, while Vaughan posted a season-best with an even-par 71.

Junior Guy Nardo is tied for eighth after a three-over par 74, while sophomore Ryan Gammons struggled in the opening round with an eight-over 79.

Teams will play the second round later Thursday and the tournament concludes Friday with the final 18 holes.
