Vaughan loses in a playoff
Paul Vaughan lost on the first hole of a playoff Friday at the Union Univ. Fall Invitational.

LEBANON, Tenn. – Junior Paul Vaughan lost on the first playoff hole after shooting a 73 and junior Dustin Thomas, senior Austin Whitmer and freshman Austin Garrett all tied for sixth for Cumberland’s golf team Friday at the Union University Fall Invitational at Jackson National Golf Club in Jackson, Tenn.

Vaughan lost in a playoff to Union’s Ryan Chandler for medalist honors at the opening fall event for both teams. Vaughan shot 37-36 for one-over par on the 7,011-yard, par-72 course.

Vaughan and Chandler played the 18th hole for the playoff, with Vaughan’s drive going left into the rough. His approach nearly got over the steep slope near the pin, but held in place for a moment before rolling back off the green. He chipped to five feet but lipped out the putt. All the while Chandler managed a par for the victory.

Thomas, Whitmer and Garrett all carded rounds of 39 and 38 in some order, tying for sixth. All three players were on Cumberland’s “A” team, along with sophomore Caleb Evans, who shot 82, and junior Guy Nardo, who struggled all day and finished with an 85.

Vaughan’s score led the “B” team. Freshman Christian Spicer carded an 82, while sophomore Zach Brewer fired an 84, freshman Stuart Oldham posted an 85 and sophomore Ryan Gammons withdrew.

Cumberland lost the team portion of the eight-team event by 12 strokes to Union.
