Botts shoots 73, tied for eighth at Winter Invite

LEBANON, Tenn. – Senior Ryan Botts shot one-over par 73 and is tied for eighth while junior Zach Johnson carded an opening-round 75 on Monday to lead the Cumberland men’s golf team at the Coastal Georgia Winter Invitational at Sea Island Golf Club in St. Simons Island, Ga.

The tournament marks the first event this spring for the Phoenix, who shots 311 as a team for ninth among 19 teams. Cumberland trails Reinhardt University by seven shots for fifth place in the tournament.

Botts is among seven players are one-over 73, five shots off the pace of Coastal Georgia’s Paxton Shuman, who was one of three players below par for the day. Johnson stands two shots behind Botts in another crowded group of eight players.

Junior Zach Kean, who is playing individually in this event, posted an opening-round 77, tied for 32nd among 107 players. The rest of the Cumberland contingent struggled in their first competitive rounds of the spring.

Junior Jake Dailey carded a first-round 81, tied for 60th, while sophomore Austin Williams shot 82, tied for 67th, and sophomore Zach Polston, registered an 88, tied for 95th overall.

Shotgun start for the final round begins at 8:30 a.m. Eastern Time on Tuesday.
