BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Tomi Acotto shot five-under-par 67, senior Bryson Smith carded a 72, and Cumberland held the first-round lead in the team standings after Monday in the Mid-South Conference Men’s Golf Championships at Bowling Green Country Club.
Cumberland shot 288 as a team in the first round, nine shots ahead of Lindsey Wilson, 14 in front of Campbellsville University and Thomas More University. The second 18 holes should be completed on Tuesday.
Acotto collected five birdies in his round of 67 and went bogey-free in the first 18 holes, placing first individually, five shots ahead of Smith in second place at the Championships. Smith shot even-par after shooting a 39 on the front but finished the back nine strong with four birdies in the last six holes to get to even.
Adrian Steeger netted two birdies and four bogeys for a two-over 74. Steeger shot two over on the front with a bogey on hole No. 1 and No. 3, but shot even on the back to sit in a tie for fifth place.
Isaac Walker played steady golf all day netting three bogeys and 15 pars for a 75 and a tie for 10th place. A bogey on No. 4 lead to a one-over front nine and bogeys at No. 13 and 18 finished his round.
Freshman Will Samuelsson netted one birdie, four bogeys, and a double in his round of five-over-par 77.
The Phoenix will tee off from hole No. 1 beginning tomorrow at 9:20 a.m.
