Soccer loses two one-goal matches

LEBANON, Tenn. – Cumberland’s men’s soccer team lost its second straight tough match Tuesday at Bethel, falling 1-0 to the Wildcats after dropping a 2-1 decision to 23rd-ranked Martin Methodist over the weekend.
On Saturday at Friendship Christian School in a rescheduled match from earlier in the week, Robert Boyd put the Bulldogs (6-5-1) ahead with a goal in the 56th minute from Plinio Campos.
But MMC scored twice in a five-minute stretch later in the half, first on a goal from Luke Beckett on an assist from Fernando Andrade in the 66th minute. Fernando Barbeiro then scored the game-winner for the Redhawks in the 70th minute on another assist from Andrade.
On Tuesday at Bethel, Dawayne Smith headed in a goal on an assist from Armando Orozco in the 50th minute for the Wildcats for the match’s only score.
Cumberland keeper Michael Michailidis continued his solid play in both matches, making eight saves against Martin Methodist and six versus Bethel.
The Bulldogs play their final two regular season matches of the year next week, hosting Trevecca on Tuesday at 3 p.m. and Mid-Continent Saturday at Noon.
