Five athletes earn Daktronics-NAIA National Scholar-Athlete award

LEBANON, Tenn. – Five Cumberland volleyball and men’s and women’s soccer players were tabbed 2009 Daktronics-NAIA National Scholar-Athletes, as announced by the national office over the weekend. Nominated by each institution's head coach, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 and have achieved junior academic status to qualify.
Men’s soccer players Yue Wang, Adam Owczarzak and Francisco Zamora along with women’s soccer player Susan Simpson and volleyball player Taylor Denney all meet the NAIA’s requirements for the Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete award. Wang and Simpson were also the Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes last year.
Wang carries a 3.69 GPA in Management, while Owczarzak and Zamora sport 3.66 and 3.65 grade-point-averages, respectively, also in Management. All three men’s soccer players are seniors. Simpson, also a senior, owns a 3.96 GPA in Mathematics, and Denney, a junior, has a 3.72 grade-point-average in Accounting.
