LEBANON, Tenn. – Harry Mason scored his fifth goal in two matches, but host Union College netted the game-winner just seconds before halftime and held off a furious rally by Cumberland, taking a 2-1 victory over the Bulldogs on Saturday in the Golden Corral Classic in Barbourville, Ky.
Mason scored unassisted in the 16th minute from just over 20 yards, giving the Bulldogs an early advantage. But Union answered with a pair of goals from Dominic Scheele, both assisted by Chris Elliott, the first in the 22nd minute and the second only four seconds before intermission.
Cumberland turned up the intensity in the second half, posting a 6-2 edge in shots and taking eight corner kicks, but CU could find not the frame with its attempts, as Union keeper Andrew Metcalf did not log a save in picking up the victory. Bulldog keeper Matthew Shattuck made four saves in the loss.
Cumberland plays at Tennessee Wesleyan next Saturday in a men’s and women’s doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. CT.
